What is the lore related to Margit, the Fell Omen in Elden Ring?

margit lore

Margit, the Fell Omen, is an intriguing and enigmatic character in Elden Ring, deeply tied to the lore surrounding the royal lineage of the Golden Order and the fractured events of the Shattering. His identity and role in the game's story are layered with mystery, as he is not merely a standalone character but a manifestation of something greater.

Margit's Role and Identity

Margit is introduced to the player early in the game as a major obstacle on the path to Stormveil Castle, the fortress of Godrick the Grafted. He acts as a gatekeeper, challenging players to prove their worth before entering the Lands Between's treacherous legacy dungeons. However, Margit is not who he initially appears to be. He is later revealed to be an aspect or manifestation of Morgott, the Omen King, one of the demigod children of Queen Marika and Godfrey, the first Elden Lord.

Morgott, like his twin brother Mohg, was born as an Omen, a cursed child marked by horns and other bestial features, which are considered impure by the Golden Order. Omens are typically cast into the sewers beneath the Royal Capital, destined to live in obscurity or servitude. However, despite his cursed nature, Morgott remained loyal to the Golden Order and its ideals, unlike his brother Mohg, who sought power through the bloody embrace of the Formless Mother.

Margit as a Projection of Morgott

Margit is essentially a projection of Morgott's will, used to guard important locations and thwart Tarnished who seek to challenge the demigods. This is why Margit reappears later in the game in Leyndell, the Royal Capital, as Morgott assumes his true form to fight the player. As Margit, Morgott tests the player's resolve early on, but his true purpose becomes clearer as the story unfolds: he seeks to protect the Golden Order and prevent unworthy Tarnished from disrupting the status quo.

Connection to the Fell Omen Curse

The title "Fell Omen" hints at Margit's cursed nature as an Omen. Omens are despised by the Golden Order and the Erdtree's followers, seen as abominations. Their horns are often removed at birth, a cruel practice meant to "purify" them. However, Margit/Morgott retained his horns and grew up in the shadow of this rejection. Despite this, he chose to serve the very system that shunned him, a decision that adds complexity to his character. His loyalty to the Golden Order is both tragic and admirable, showcasing his internal conflict and the deep scars of his upbringing.

Margit's Role in the Narrative

Margit's role is multifaceted. On the surface, he is a boss meant to challenge the player's skills early in the game. However, his existence also serves as a reminder of the fractured state of the world and the internal contradictions of the Golden Order. Margit/Morgott's unwavering dedication to the Order contrasts sharply with the chaos and ambition of other demigods, such as Godrick and Radahn, who exploit their power for personal gain.

Margit embodies the themes of rejection, duty, and self-sacrifice that are central to Elden Ring's narrative. He is a character caught between his cursed nature and his unwavering belief in the ideals of the Golden Order, making him one of the more tragic figures in the game.

Margit, the Fell Omen, is not just an early-game boss but a critical piece of Elden Ring's lore. As a projection of Morgott, he represents the complexity of the Golden Order, the prejudice against Omens, and the sacrifice demanded of those who serve the greater good. His appearance early in the game foreshadows the deeper conflicts and themes that players will encounter as they delve further into the Lands Between, making him a significant and memorable character in the tapestry of *Elden Ring's* world.
